Most of the items that can be added to a Lessons page can be made "required." That is, students must open (if the item is a resource) or complete (if the item is a discussion posting, quiz, assignment, question, comment or student page). Further, the Lessons tool allows instructors to require students to complete one item in the list before allowing access to other items in the list.
Go to Lessons.
If you titled your page something other than Lessons, select the title of the page as it appears in your Tool Menu.
Select Edit.
For the item that you would like to require, select the pencil (Edit) icon that appears when you hover your cursor over the item.
Check Require that the student submit this assessment, then click Update Item.
- Under the Prerequisites & Requirements section of the item settings, check the checkbox Require This Item.
- Select Update Item.
Note: For graded items, such as assignments or quizzes, you may optionally specify a particular point value that must be earned on that item before the requirement is met.
Notice the asterisk.
From the student perspective, an asterisk will appear to the left of the required item. When viewing the page from an instructor perspective, that asterisk may appear as a checkmark. Once a student has visited or completed the required item, from their account view the asterisk will change to a checkmark to reflect completion.
Conditionally release based on prerequisites. (Optional)
Select Edit.
Select the pencil (Edit) icon that appears to the right of the item when you hover your cursor over it.
Specify completion of prerequisites.
- Under the Prerequisites & Requirements section of the item settings, check the checkbox Don't Release Item Until All Prerequisites are Completed.

Notice that items that are conditionally released display [Has prerequisites] next to the item. In the example shown above, Assignment 1 cannot be opened until the required items above it on the Lessons page have been completed.
