This article describes how to grade an assignment using the new grader interface. For instructions on grading using the older interface, please see How do I grade an assignment using the legacy grading interface?
Go to Assignments.
Select the Assignments tool from the site Tool Menu.
Select the assignment to grade.
Select the Grade option associated with an assignment.
Note: If a grading scale was not configured for an assignment, View Submissions will be displayed rather than Grade.
Use new Grader to grade submissions.
Select checkbox Use Sakai Grader to grade submissions
Tip: If you open a submission to grade and don't see the new interface, try deselecting and then reselecting Use new Grader to grade submissions.
View the student's inline submission, if available.
If available, the inline submission will display as a link. To grade the inline submission and/or an attachment, proceed by:
- Select button Grade Submission to reveal grading pane.
- (Optional) Select button Add Feedback to add text to an inline (i.e., text entry) submission.
Grade submission.
Grade the submission using the available options.
- Enter grade (points or letter) in text field.
- Score with Rubric if associated.
- To include a written comment, use Add Feedback Comment.
- To include an attachment to return, use Add Attachments.
- To make notes for graders or your own reference that will not be visible to the student, use Add Private Notes.
- To allow a student to submit a new use Allow Resubmission.
View the student's submitted attachment, if available.
- Select the attachment link to open it within the grader.
- View the attached submission in the gradable area. If the document does not display, use the document link.
Enter grade.
Enter the score for the submission in the Grade field. The maximum available points display next to the Grade field.
Or, grade with a rubric. (Optional)
If a rubric is associated with the assignment, select the Rubric button to grade with the rubric.
- Use the criteria degree tiles to score the submission.
- Use the speech bubble icon to add a comment pertaining to the criterion.
- When finished scoring with the rubric, select Done.
Add Feedback Comment.
To add holistic written feedback, select button Add Feedback Comment.
- Enter comments in the Rich Text Editor.
- Select Done to save comment.
Add a feedback attachment. (Optional)
To add a file attachment as part of feedback that will be available to the student, select Add Attachments button to locate and attach a file from your device.
Add private notes. (Optional)
- Select button Add Private Notes to include additional information about your feedback for other instructors or TAs to view, but that will not be visible to the student.
- Type notes in Rich Text Editor.
- Select Done to save notes.
Allow resubmissions. (Optional)
To allow the student to resubmit an assignment, select the Allow Resubmission checkbox and specify (1) the number of resubmissions allowed and (2) the date until which they will be accepted.
Tip: If you allowed resubmissions on the assignment when you created it, this information will be prepopulated with the default resubmission information for this assignment. Override the default resubmission settings for an individual student by changing the information in the Allow Resubmission area.
Save the score and feedback.
- Select Save to save the grade and any included attachments or feedback. This option does not release the grade to the student.
- Or, select Save and Release to Student to immediately release the grade and feedback to the student.
Tip: Some instructors prefer to release all of the grades and feedback at one time after they have finished entering grades for the entire class. See How do I release assignment grades? for more information about releasing all grades and feedback at one time.
Navigate to other submissions. (Optional)
Navigate to other student submissions to using the left arrow icon (View the previous submission), the right arrow icon (View the next submission), or the dropdown caret.
