Add the VoiceThread tool.
Add VoiceThread to the site either by adding the VoiceThread tool to the site Tool Menu or by adding a VoiceThread learning app link in Lessons.
Note: If planning to use more than one VoiceThread Assignment, use the method of adding the VoiceThread learning app link in Lessons. Multiple instances of the VoiceThread tool cannot be added to the site tools menu.

Add VoiceThread as a Learning App link in Lessons.
- Go to the Lessons tool (or Lessons page) that will feature the VoiceThread Assignment.
- Select Add Content.
From the Add Content menu, select Add Learning App in the section Simple Content Items.
Select the VoiceThread link from the list.
A Configure External Tool window will appear.
- (Optional) Modify the Tool description field to describe the VoiceThread assignment.
- Complete the required field for Tool Title by typing a name for the tool in the text field (you can type VoiceThread or another descriptor for your context, such as "VoiceThread Introductions" or "Chapter 3 Lecture," etc. ). This field can be modified in Lessons after the VoiceThread link is added.
- Enter the same Tool Title text in the Button Text field.
- Select Save to complete the addition of VoiceThread in Lessons.
Review VoiceThread link in Lessons and set view.
Select the VoiceThread link just added to the Lessons page.
Configure VoiceThread Assignment type.
VoiceThread Assignment Builder has three (3) different assignment types to configure: Create, Comment, or Watch.
The Create assignment type requires students to create a VoiceThread. Sample contexts might include a presentation slide deck with narration, a multimodal journal, or a recorded technique demonstration.
The Comment assignment type requires students to comment on an existing VoiceThread that you upload. Sample contexts might include close reading exercises, such as commenting on a painting or political cartoon, responding to a reading prompt, or responding to a question.
The Watch assignment type requires students to view an existing VoiceThread of your choosing. Sample contexts might include viewing a lecture, viewing another student presentation, or viewing a gallery.
The Reconnect Previous Assignment option allows to add a previously created assignment you created through the Assignment Builder.
Select the Create option.
Select Continue.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Continue.
Choose Create assignment options.
Use the checkboxes to select desired options for the Create assignment. Then, select Continue.
Tip: If you want students to view each other's VoiceThreads for the assignment, be sure to select the checkbox under Student Gallery.

- Type in an Assignment name.
- Type in Assignment instructions.
- (Optional) Include an Example URL of an existing VoiceThread for reference.
- Type in a submission message to the student (this appears after they complete a submission).
- Check the box next to Students Must Complete A Prior Assignment Before Starting This One to require a prerequisite (if applicable).
- Enter a Start Date.
- Enter a Due Date.
- Enter a Close Date.
- Check this box to Allow Students to Resubmit Assignment.
- Check this box to Allow Students to View Assignment After Submitting.
- Select the grading type for this assignment by choosing Percentage, Complete/Incomplete, or Points.
- Select Publish to apply assignment details.
Select the Comment option.
Select Continue.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Continue.
Select a VoiceThread to copy or create a new VoiceThread for the assignment.
The VoiceThreads that you can edit will appear in a view for you to copy and use for the Comment assignment. Alternatively, you can create a new VoiceThread to use for the assignment.
Select copy comment options.
If an existing VoiceThread is selected, specify which comments you will copy from the VoiceThread for the Comment assignment.
- All comments means any comment made on the existing VoiceThread will be copied over onto the comment assignment.
- My comments means the only comments authored by you will be copied over onto the comment assignment.
- No comments means no comments will be copied over onto the comment assignment.
Select Continue.
Scroll down and select Continue.
Edit slides as desired.
The following view will display all of the slides within the VoiceThread. Any slide can be edited or deleted from the VoiceThread by selecting the three vertical dots beneath the slide's thumbnail.
Select Continue to preview the edited VoiceThread.
Select Continue.
Preview the VoiceThread.
In the bottom-right corner of the screen, use the arrow buttons to navigate through the slides in the VoiceThread, or select the rectangle icon to display the slides in gallery view. After previewing the VoiceThread, select Continue.
After previewing the VoiceThread, select options to configure VoiceThread assignment.
Use the checkboxes to select desired options for the Comment assignment. Then, select Continue.

- Type in an Assignment name.
- Type in Assignment instructions.
- (Optional) Include an Example URL of an existing VoiceThread for reference.
- Type in a submission message to the student (this appears after they complete a submission)

Select VoiceThread for Watch assignment and choose copy comment options.
From the gallery of VoiceThreads you can edit, select a VoiceThread for Watch assignment. If an existing VoiceThread is selected, specify which comments you will copy from the VoiceThread for the Comment assignment.
- All comments means any comment made on the existing VoiceThread will be copied over onto the comment assignment.
- My comments means the only comments authored by you will be copied over onto the comment assignment.
- No comments means no comments will be copied over onto the comment assignment.
Select Continue.
Scroll down and select Continue.

Select the Reconnect Previous Assignment option to connect a prior assignment created with VoiceThread Assignment Builder (if applicable).
Select Publish
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Publish.
