How do I create or comment on a VoiceThread?

For additional assistance creating, commenting on, or sharing a VoiceThread, please see the VoiceThread website.

To comment on another user's VoiceThread, access the VoiceThread and follow the instructions in the Select Comment section below.

The directions below reference the new VoiceThread interface (legacy interface will be available until Summer 2024). To switch to the new VoiceThread now, follow these steps.

Access VoiceThread.

At luc.voicethread.com

Select Sign in via institution.

Navigate to luc.voicethread.com. Select Sign in via institution.

Search for Loyola.

  1. Search for Loyola in the Enter your Institution's title or domain text field.
  2. Choose Loyola University Chicago from the list of search results.

Select Sign in.

Select Sign in.

Enter credentials.

  1. Enter UVID and Loyola password in the designated fields.
  2. Then, select Sign in.
In Sakai.

Select VoiceThread.

In a Sakai site, select the VoiceThread tool from the site Tool Menu.

Select +.

Select the + (plus) icon in the upper left corner of the screen.

Note: Before creating or commenting on a VoiceThread, ensure that your web browser is set to allow pop-ups.

Select a media type.

Select one of the options to add or record media:

  1. Add from computer: Choose one or more files from your computer.
  2. Record video slide: Begin a new video recording using your computer's internal webcam or an external, connected camera.
  3. Copy from VoiceThread: Copy an existing VoiceThread.
  4. External source: Select media from Flickr or Google Drive.
  5. Enter a URL: Add an image or video from the internet by entering its URL.
  6. Take a picture: Take a photo using your webcam.
  7. Record audio slide: Begin a new audio recording using your computer's internal microphone or an external, connected microphone.

Note: If you select video slide, take a picture, or audio slide, you may be prompted to allow VoiceThread to access your microphone and camera. If prompted, select Allow.

Add additional media. (Optional)

To add additional media to your VoiceThread, select the + Add media button. See Select a Media Type for a description of the different media you may add.

Select a slide.

To begin adding comments to your VoiceThread, select any slide.

Note: The playhead icon will appear on a slide as you hover your cursor over that slide.

Select Comment.

To comment on the media added to your VoiceThread, select the Comment (i.e., speech bubble) icon.

Select a comment type.

Select one of the options to add or record a comment:

  1. Text: Type a text comment.
  2. Audio Comment: Record an audio comment using your computer's internal microphone or an external, connected microphone.
  3. Video Comment: Record a video comment using your computer's internal webcam or an external, connected camera.
  4. Upload a Comment: Select a file on your computer to add as a comment.

Note: If you select Audio Comment or Video Comment, you may be prompted to allow VoiceThread to access your microphone and camera. If prompted, select Allow.

Play comment. (Optional)

Once added, your comment will be visible in the comments panel on the left. Your initials or profile photo, your name, and the date and time are visible in the comments panel. To play, reply to, or delete your comment, select it from the comments panel.
