How do I transfer content from a Sakai site into a Brightspace course?

Updated on

Transferring content from a Sakai site to a Brightspace course can be done in several ways: Sakai Lessons export and import, manual course building, or requesting a Sakai Site Archive file for import.

Sakai Lessons export and import and manual course building are processes that do not require system administrative assistance.

Requesting a Sakai Site Archive file requires submitting a request to the ITS Service Desk, followed by an import process into Brightspace by the site owner.

Export Sakai Lessons content for Brightspace import.

Select Lessons.

Sakai course site tool menu
  1. Navigate to the Sakai site from which content will be imported into Brightspace.
  2. From the Sakai site, go to Lessons (the Lessons page shown is titled Start Here).
  3. Select More Tools from the Actions Menu to reveal a menu dialog.

Uploaded archive file/course package confirmation

Once the Sakai archive file is selected and uploaded, select Import All Components to execute the transfer. Alternatively, select Advanced Options to see what discrete components are available in the archive file for selection.

Warning: If your originating Sakai site has diverse content items and external tool content, the import may be more precise by selecting Advanced Options. The conversion of the exported Sakai file will list which content items are actually available for import into Brightspace and is therefore less likely to fail if there is an incompatible content item within the export file.

Wait for import to complete.

Once the import process is initiated, a progress dialog will appear. Feel free to take a break as prompted.

View imported content.

When the archive file has completed its import process, the button View Content will become available. Select View Content.

Warning: Because Sakai and Brightspace differ in their organization and structure of course content, reviewing content for order and location within the Brightspace course is necessary.  The example shown is a "successful import" but notice the sequence of weekly modules is jumbled.

Request Sakai Site Archive file.

If you find the above attempt too difficult or your attempt with the above independent process of Sakai export and Brightspace import fails, open a ticket with the ITS Service Desk with subject line Request for Sakai Site Archive file.

Loyola LMS administrators will assist you in the process by providing a prepared Site Archive file for your import into Brightspace.
