FAQ: Migrating Sakai question pools to Brightspace Question Library

Updated on

Q: Will my Sakai question pools automatically migrate to Brightspace?

A: No. If your Sakai course uses question pools, they will not be migrated automatically as part of the standard course migration process. If you would like to retain and use your Sakai question pools in Brightspace, you must export them from Sakai and import them into a Brightspace course.

Q: How do I export my question pools from Sakai?

A: Within any Sakai course in which you are an instructor:

  1. Navigate to any Lessons tool.
  2. Select More Tools from the Actions Menu.
  3. Choose Export CC from the dropdown menu.
  4. From the export options, select Export as 1.3, recommended for Sakai, Canvas, and Brightspace.
  5. Check the checkbox Include all question pools you can access as a single question bank.
  6. Select Download to complete the export process.

Q: Can I import only the question pool without importing an entire course?

A: Yes. You can use the Advanced Options during the Brightspace import process to select the Question Library instead of importing all components. This allows you to bring your question bank into your Brightspace course or Sandbox without importing the entire Sakai course.

Q: How do I import my Sakai question pools into Brightspace?

A: Once you have downloaded the export package from Sakai, you can import the Question Library instead of importing all components:

  1. Open your Brightspace course or sandbox site.
  2. Select More from the Navigation Bar and choose Course Admin.
  3. Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
  4. Choose Import Components and select Start.
  5. Upload the package you downloaded from Sakai.
  6. To import the entire package, select the option to import all components. To import only specific content, select Advanced Options.
  7. Under the advanced import options, check the checkbox for Question Library to import the Sakai question pools.
  8. Complete the import process and choose View Content.
  9. In your Brightspace course or sandbox site, select Quizzes from the Navigation Bar.
  10. Select Question Library to verify that the contents of your Sakai question pools are available in your Brightspace Question Library.

Important: After importing, review the questions in the Brightspace Question Library to confirm that the content transferred correctly before using the questions in assessments.

Q: How do Sakai question pools differ from the Brightspace Question Library?

  • A: Sakai Question Pools: Question pools in Sakai can act as standalone or shared repositories that exist somewhat independently from a course and can be shared across different courses or with other instructors.
  • Brightspace Question Library: The Question Library is tied directly to a specific course shell. When you move or copy Brightspace course content, the Question Library moves with the course itself rather than belonging independently to an instructor's profile.
