LockDown Browser works much like a conventional web browser, though many options are removed and restricted. The distinctive features of LockDown Browser include:
- Assessments (tests) are displayed full-screen and cannot be minimized
- Browser menu and toolbar options are removed, except for Back, Forward, Refresh and Stop
- Prevents access to other applications including messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machines, and remote desktops
- Printing and screen capture functions are disabled
- Copying and pasting anything to or from an assessment is prevented
- Right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts, and task switching are disabled
- An assessment cannot be exited until the student submits it for grading
- Assessments that are set up for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with other browsers
Students need a computer with Windows 10 or Mac OS X 10.13 or higher to install and use LockDown Browser.
Chromebooks and mobile devices (i.e. smartphones and tablets) are not compatible with LockDown Browser

- Modified Toolbar: The limited browser toolbar includes only Forward, Back, Refresh, and Stop functions, plus a tool to insert special characters in text answers.
- Assessment Mode: Assessments are shown fullscreen and cannot be minimized, resized, or exited until submitted for grading.
- Disabled Controls: All printing, keystroke combinations, screen grab, function keys, and right-click menus are disabled.
- Links: Links to other course areas (such as Resources) and web servers will not open and do not compromise the secure testing environment.
- Blocked Features and Applications: The Start button (Windows), system tray/dock, and menu bars are removed from access during the exam.
