How do I create an assessment in Tests and Quizzes?

Updated on

The Tests & Quizzes tool allows you to create online assessments (i.e., tests, quizzes, exams, and surveys). It was designed primarily to administer tests, but you may also create assessments to gather survey information or informal course feedback. Grading for most question types is done automatically, and grades can be posted automatically to an online gradebook.

These instructions will show you how to create a simple assessment and add a single question.

Select Tests & Quizzes.

Select Tests & Quizzes

Select the Tests & Quizzes tool from the Tool Menu of your course.

Select Add.

Select Add

Select Add from the Actions Menu.

Enter a title and select Create.

Enter a title and select Create
  1. Give the new assessment a title in the Assessment Title field.
  2. Then, select Create. The "Create using assessment builder" option allows for questions to be created one at a time, with a simple example given in the steps below.  For other methods of creating an assessment, see How do I create an assessment from markup text or cut and paste? and How do I import/export an assessment?

Note: You cannot have more than one assessment with the same title.

Add a question.

Use the dropdown menu to select a question type

Choose the type of question from the Add Question drop-down menu.

The following example depicts the process of creating a Multiple Choice question type (highlighted in the above image).

Set the general question options.

Add a point value, choose whether to dis[play the point value, designate extra credit if desired, and type the question text

Most question types allow you to specify:

  1. Answer Point Value
  2. Display the point value while student is taking the exam
  3. Mark the question as Extra Credit
  4. Question Text
  5. Attachments (optional)

For these general parameters, see How do I create a new question (with the assessment builder)? Other options regarding the answer and configuration are specific to the question type.

Note: The Rich Text Editor is available for use in composing your questions and answers. Select the Show All Rich-Text Editors link to display the editor.

Choose number of correct responses (for multiple choice).

Select the answer setting

A Multiple Choice question can be programmed to have a Single Correct response, Multiple Correct, Single Selection, or Multiple Correct, Multiple Selection.

Single Correct (the default) designates that there is one single correct response. Single Correct has the option to Enable Negative Marking (i.e., Points deducted for incorrect answer) if desired. Negative marking deducts points from the score if an incorrect response is selected.

Select the radio button to designate the desired Answer setting.

Enter answer choices (for multiple choice).

Type answer choices in the text fields, choose the correct answer, and add or remove answer options if needed
  1. Enter each possible answer response for the question in a separate text field. (Remember that the editor can be used to format the answer choices or to add images, links, etc.)
  2. Indicate the correct answer by selecting the radio button for the correct response.
  3. There are four (4) answer response text fields provided by default. If more response fields are desired, use the Insert Additional Answers drop-down menu to indicate the number of additional answer choices needed.
  4. If fewer than four (4) answer response text fields are needed, select Remove to remove one answer response.

Randomize answers (for multiple choice).

Choose whether to randomize answers

By default, the option to randomize the order of answer responses in a multiple choice question is No. For the answer choices to appear in a random order each time a student takes the assessment, select Yes.

Tip: Remember that for answer choices that contain phrasing like "all of the above" or "A and B are correct," randomizing the order will cause confusion for the test-taker.

Choose whether or not to require rationale.

Choose whether to require a rationale

By default, No is the setting applied for requiring rationale. If test takers should include an explanation (rationale) for why they selected a particular answer response, select the Yes radio button.

Assign to part. (Optional)

Assign the question to a part

If there are multiple parts in the assessment, the question can be assigned to a specific part.

Assign to pool. (Optional)

Copy the question to a pool

If a question pool exists, the question can be copied to the question pool using the drop-down menu.

Provide answer feedback. (Optional)

provide feedback

To provide general feedback for test takers based on whether the question was answered correctly or incorrectly, enter comments in the respective text field.

Save question.

Select Save

Once the question content and settings are completed, select Save to return to the edit assessment screen.

Continue adding questions.

Continue adding questions

Repeat the steps above to add additional questions to the assessment.  While composing the assessment, note the following:

  1. The total number of questions in the assessment and its total points will be displayed in the upper right corner of the assessment page.
  2. The questions within the assessment can be viewed in the edit assessment page, along with each question's answer key shown below each question.
  3. To delete a question, select the Remove link to the right of the question.
  4. To change to an existing question, select the Edit link to the right of the question.

Tip: An assessment must have at least one question worth greater than zero points in order to be added to the Gradebook.
