How do I grade an assessment (i.e. test or quiz) using a rubric?

Select Tests & Quizzes.

Select Tests & Quizzes

Select the Tests & Quizzes tool from the site Tool Menu.

From the Actions menu for the assessment you want to grade, select Scores.

Select Actions and choose Scores
  1. Select the Actions dropdown menu to the right of the quiz to be graded.
  2. Choose Scores.

Tip: You may also select the number in the Submitted column to go to the student submissions for an assessment.

To grade one student at a time, select the student's name for the submission to be graded.

Select a student's name from the roster.

Select Grading Rubric.

Select the Grading Rubric tab.

Select rating levels.

Select rating levels

Select the appropriate rating levels. The points will be added up automatically based on the rating selections. The total points earned will appear below the rubric.

Adjust scores. (Optional)

If individual score adjustment was applied in the assessment question settings, the rating points can be modified if desired. The modification is denoted by the original criteria score struck through. In the example above, the student was awarded 44 points, but the instructor chose to adjust their score for the  criterion from 44 to 46.

Enter criterion comments. (Optional)

To comment on a specific criterion:

  1. Select the comment bubble icon for that criterion.
  2. Enter your comment into the text field provided.
  3. Select Done.

Note: The Comments icon changes color when there are comments saved.

Select Update.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Update when finished grading the assessment.

Alternatively, select the Questions tab to grade one question at a time for the whole class.

Select Questions from the menu beneath the assessment title.

Select the link for a question with an associated rubric.

Select the Rubric icon for the student you want to grade.

Select the rubric icon for the student you want to begin grading.

Select the appropriate rating level for each criterion.

Select the appropriate rating level for each criterion. The points will be added up automatically based on the rating selections. The total points earned will appear below the rubric.

In the example above, the student was awarded 38 points, but the instructor chose to adjust their score for the criterion from 38 to 40. The 38 is struck through and the student's overall score changes to 40.

Optional: Select the Comment icon [Leave a comment for the student about this criterion] to include additional feedback.

Select Save.

Select Save after scoring all student submissions to this question.
